Caston Band: “Three Climates of Man’s Exisitence” Project

PLAINS RAINBOW

FULTON , INDIANA

Great iChat session last week on Plains and Jungle!
I know I was pretty picky with you but that kind if attention to detail from the very start will pay off in a big way as you work your way through the music, saving time close to your performance for more nuance and musical shaping!

I’m looking forward to our next session!
If you wish you can post comments or questions on this blog and I will try to answer them right away.

I really enjoyed our session. I believe it is better to work with the composer rather than do something this cool and just play it in a poor manner. I am looking forward to the next video chat.

I-chatting with you was a great experience. thank you for everything and for taking time to get to know all of us! I was hoping next time we could work on some saxophone parts. I’ve been having trouble with jungle and could really use some advice.
    Thanks again,
    Jasimine (saxophone section leader)

I’m sure we can fit this in Jasimine!
What seems to be the issue?

      • Jasimine westbrook says:

Well my problem and some of the others in section, is from measure 168 I think, to the end. speed is mainly the issue. I’ve always had a problem with getting my fingers to change notes as fast as my brain does.

Thank you for taking time out your schedule to help us. It’s humbling to know that somebody with a name such as yours not only notices, but appreciates a little school like ours. It was very helpful to understand where your ideas came from and the hopes you have for the pieces. It helps us appreciate and understand the works. Thanks again.

So slow it way down so that your brain thinks FASTER than you fingers
    MUCH slower!

I REALLY like the rainbow art from the score!

Hey, Mr. Davis. I’d just like to say thank you for taking time to work with us. We all are truely greatful! I’m looking forward to our i-chat session tomorrow! I was wondering if you could give me some advice about a piece I’m writing. I’m kinda having trouble figuring out what chord progression I should use. I would be so greatful if you could tell me which chord progressions have the most tension in both a major and minor progression. Thank you so much for your time!

      Hi Tucker
Looking forward to the Early AM iChat as well! I’m on vacation this week so it will be great to see someone ELSE work!

As far as a chord progressions for your piece – Do you have a melody yet? For me that will drive the decisions for creating a chord progression. As far as the most tension – that would depend on the PURPOSE or REASON for the music. Tell me more. Maybe I can help.

Thank you so much for helping us work on those sections of Jungle!

I do have a melody. I’m thinking of something along the lines of Ravel’s Bolero. If you would be kind enought to give me your email adrees, I could email the file to you, or you could email me at thomasjs223@gmail.com. Thank you so much

  7. Brant Gerald says:

I was wondering if you had any tricks on how I could make sure I don’t go over with the improvised solos? It tends to be difficult to keep track of the measures while I’m improvising. Thanks for helping us along as we all push the limits of our talent!

    • tomdavismusic says:

I think that when the band really knows the piece you will hear and feel the from better. How about practicing to the audio? Would you like me to make you a practice track?

  8. James Byrn says:

    Mr. Davis,

You sought to educate my students through this commission. I appreciate you are both a world class composer and a world class educator. It was an honor to work with you!
